Islan Guåhan

Guam is the largest of the Marianas archipelago, an island chain located in the South Pacific and the closest landmasses lining the Marianas Trench. Ancestral home to the CHamoru people, the Marianas are part of Micronesia but most of the islands, including Guam, are territories or of the United States. The entire island is around 30 x 11 miles and can fit inside the city of San Francisco.

Though Guam is American by citizenship, its placement in the Asia-Pacific makes it a melting pot of cultures and people found in that region of the world. Funnily enough, the majority population of Asians and Pacific Islanders on Guam is the least represented in the continental U.S.

Guam has endured over 300 years of colonial occupation from the Spanish, Japanese, and American forces. Though the landscape and ecosystem of the island has changed dramatically from what it was naturally meant to be, the CHamoru people, land, and language remains resilient.
